Shell suspends chip and pin
Petrol giant Shell has suspended the use of chip and pin for payment at its 600 UK garages, following the discovery of a £1m fraud ring.
The fraud involved the modification of the pin input devices to syphon off small amounts from customers accounts as they entered their pins, even though the machines were supposedly designed to shut down if anyone tried to tamper with them.
Police have said that 8 people in the south of England have been arrested in connection with the ongoing inquiry.
For its part, Shell has said that the systems it used for chip and pin all met or exceeded the required standards, and that it hoped to have pin payment available again as soon as possible.
