Overseas Card Fraud Warning

The latest figures from payments association Apacs show a steep rise in credit card fraud committed overseas using UK-issued cards, and holidaymakers are being warned to keep a close eye on their plastic.

A total of £118.2m of such overseas fraud was committed last year, which represented a rise of £36 over the year before.

The increase is in part down to the increasing willingness of cardholders to use their debit and credit cards abroad, with £23bn being spent last year.

The top 3 fraud hotspots are reported as the USA (£16.7m), France (£7.5m) and Spain (£6.7m), although the latter two countries have plans to introduce Chip and PIN technology which is expected to bring the fraud levels down significantly.
