The Shell Mastercard from Citibank

The cost of fuel is big news at the moment, with record oil prices feeding through into garage forecourt prices that a soaring to levels few imagined until recently. With this in mind, anything that can be done to reduce the costs of petrol or diesel is likely to be welcome for most drivers.

The Shell Mastercard from Citi is one of the few UK examples of a type of credit card very popular in the USA, a fuel affinity card. Simply put, buy your fuel from a Shell garage using the card and you'll enjoy a great cash back rate of 3%. Use the card to buy anything else from any other retailer, and you'll still receive 1% cash back, which is a very creditable rate indeed considering that many rival cards' long term cash back rates are 0.5% or even less.

The card features a standard rate of 16.9% typical APR, pretty average by today's standards, plus a seemingly obligatory offer of 0% for 12 months on balance transfers.
